Man Mo Miu
Man Mo Miu sounds real cute but its cantonese for Wen Wu Temple which is located along Hollywood street. It is a taoist temple and most Hong Kong-ers are Taoist. I actually really love the style of taoist temples, they often have an air of mystery and wonderment (maybe its because of the intense amount of incense inside as well!)
It reminds me a little of stepping into a Mulan ancestral place. The minute you step in, there are rows of hanging incense spiral, most of them have a brass plate under them so you don’t get hit by ash and ember. Like all similar taoist temples there is always a light well in the middle of the temple that lights up the otherwise quite dark temple. It feels comforting somehow.
So what’s with this whole burning of incense really? There is a reason for it and its quite beautiful when you think about it. We believed that when you pray, you place your prayers into the joss sticks/incense spirals. When you light it up, the smoke slowly floats up to the heavens and the gods will hear our prayers.
Lanterns are given when you donate a certain amount, again you can write the names of your loved ones, wishes, blessings and hopes on it.
A fun thing to do : Grab this bamboo container and kneel in front of the gods and ask a question your heart desires, does my crush love me? Will I get promotion when i’m back from my holiday trip? Will I be rich???
One stick of bamboo will drop out and you can have your fortune read at the counter. Usually like a fortune cookie, theres a one liner with a funny old chinese wisdom.
This grand doorway. I’m not sure why its placed INSIDE of the temple but I suppose it’s a fengshui thing.
Light and shadow.
The entrance of the temple.
Finally, me at a curious little store with a wonderful door!
